The default idea seems be controlling your home entertainment center. While getting ready of all those remotes, one for the TV, one for the cable box, one for the DVR, one of the DVD and combining these into one system and a single remote control would be nice, your home automation system today can do so much more.
With a sophisticated automation system you can control lighting, HVAC, multi-room audio systems and the ability to even other things.

I recently left for very early in the morning for work trip. I had to be up at 3:30 am to make it to the airport.
To stay awake, I made myself coffee but guess what I forgot to turn off before I left my home?
It was early. I was half asleep. I was in a hurry.
I was going to be gone a week with the coffee maker on. It sure would have been nice to have been able to have shut the coffee maker off while still at the airport.
